Frog!!!
Never underestimate toys; they are not only fun to play with, children learn from them.

My MIL bought a set of rubber bathtub frogs for Jean when she was a baby. She knows that's frog because we told her so. Now she could identify a few different animals like dog (which she calls wouh-wouh), cat (she calls it mao 猫), bear (be it polar bear or brown bear), frog (she says fog) , fish (she pronounced as pee), bird (she says bird-bird) etc.

My Papa related this to me yesterday evening. He was flipping the children story board book and pointed to different animals to show tell her what they are. On one page, he pointed to a drawing that resembles frog/toad and told her "Toad!"
Do you know how my girl reacted? She replied, "Fog!!! (meanning frog la)" instead. End up the grandPa burst out laughing! Hahahahah! Isn't that funny? Reminds me of a TV commercial moons ago that featured a kid correcting the father it's an orchid instead of just flower.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On an unrelated note, I saw a full arc of rainbow on my way to work this morning. A FULL arc leh!!! Some more have secondary bow eventhough it is faint! I can see the primary bow from horizon to horizon, very clear too. That's the first time I've seen a full rainbow (it's rare you know!). Does this signify good things are coming our way? I hope so.
雨过天晴的彩虹,而且是完整的拱形,是我一生中第一次见到的。这... 是不是象征了什么?伯乐就快出现?希望是。

My New Look
Hey, if you are not visiting me for the first time, did you notice any difference here? *winks*
I have finally stumbled upon an image I think is suitable for dressing up my site. I had to edit the original image by using paint brush *sigh*... yeah you've heard me right, paint brush...! Because I don't have photoshop in my computer, and my photoshop skill is nil too! LOL! Nevertheless, I'm quite happly with the result but believe photoshop can do much better.
Putting up the image as header not as easy as I've thought (hahah... maybe because I'm dumb!). I had to try several times and also check on other people's coding to make sure the codes are put in the right places. With trials and errors, and staring at the codes for minutes to figure out what's wrong, finally I've manage to put it up. *phew!*
With this new head gear, I feel as if it has given me a new identity, a sense of belonging... a unique existence! I like the new look; it is warm and classy, like a woman of impeccable taste (hahah... I've got a thick skin haven't I told you before? :P) . But still it lacks something... like colour! Due to me being clueless about HTML codes, I can't do much now until someone can enlighten me on how to select the colour I want and add the codes.
I hope you like my new look as much as I do.

Walking... Talking...
Today my girl is exactly eighteen months old.

I came back from work to find that she's finally walking! Woohoo... I am so so happy! Yup! Walking on her own whithout holding anyone's hand around mama's house. She walked to the kitchen to see 'ah mar', after a while walked to the living to play with 'ah kung'. Basically she explored mama's house on her own the whole day!

Besides walking, she had learnt to say these few words (on top of calling us), namely

babbit - rabbit
chocks - socks
mao - cat in mandarin
pan - fan
pee - fish
poo - refering to pooh bear
ooo - have in hokkien
boh - none in hokkien
ai - want in hokkien
mai - don't want in hokkien
bear bear - refering to bear
walk walk - walk
gai gai - go places
pay - play
ba bye - bye bye etc.

If you ask her to give you a kiss with sound, she'd do it with "mm...mwah"! Now that's my girl! :)

Singing Baby
This is the english version of what I about Jean in mandarin a few post back. I promised Big Bok I would write in English; so here it is :)

About two months ago, I sang "How much is that doggie in the window?" song for Jean while lullaby her to sleep. The lyrics go something like this,

How much is that doggie in the window? (arf! arf!)
The one with the waggley tail
How much is that doggie in the window? (arf! arf!)
I do hope that doggie's for sale

I must take a trip to California
And leave my poor sweetheart alone
If she has a dog, she won't be lonely
And the doggie will have a new home

How much is that doggie in the window? (arf! arf!)
The one with the waggley tail
How much is that doggie in the window? (arf! arf!)
I do hope that doggie's for sale

I read in the paper there are robbers (roof! roof!)
With flashlights that shine in the dark
If she has a dog, he can protect her
And scare them away with one bark (roof!)

How much is that doggie in the window? (arf! arf!)
The one with the waggley tail
How much is that doggie in the window? (arf! arf!)
I do hope that doggie's for sale

Every time she hears *arf! arf!* she’d giggle. She likes the song too, because whenever I ask her if she’d like me to sing that song, she would nod her head and pause to listen.

Few days later, I sang that song again and she surprised me with an *arf!* after “How much is that doggie in the window?”! Like little puppy’s bark, short and sweet. She would then wait for the turn to add the *arf!* again, and smile! Isn’t that sweet? :)

Now, she has started to pick up humming some of the nursery rhymes I usually sing to her. Even though her pronunciation is not so clear, we know what she’s sing because she got the melody and rhythm right. For example, I sing “Are you sleeping? Baby Jean” she would sing it as “ah you *hum hum*, baby bee (couldn’t pronounce her own name yet).

Yesterday, I just found out that she‘s beginning to sing a little bit of twinkle twinkle little star.

DG : Twinkle twinkle little.. *pause*
Jean : ah…
DG : How I wonder what you.. *pause*
Jean : ah…
DG : Up above the world so.. *pause*
Jean : ai…
DG : Like a diamond in the.. *pause*
Jean : ky…
DG : *beaming* clever girl! *hugs and kiss kiss baby*

Spagetti Carbonara
Not many people here have heard about spaghetti carbonara; I asked some of my colleagues, they have never heard of it. I asked Jason, he too has never heard nor eaten it. I think most people here associate spaghetti with only tomato based sauces. In fact I was one of those people too until hubby introduced me to one of his favourite Italian food, pasta (any type you fancy; spaghetti, fetuccine, penne etc.) carbonara. Now it has become one of my favourite!

Last Friday, I craved for spaghetti carbonara so I looked for authentic recipe on the internet. After gone back home I remembered still have some bacons left in the fridge; a check in the kitchen confirmed I have most of the ingredients. Therefore I decided to cook it on Saturday.

My spaghetti carbonara :)

It is a simple dish but tasted wonderful. I was really very satisfied with the result even though I substituted pecorino cheese with cheddar. It's creamy but not overly so! I dare say it tasted better than served in some of the restaurants here :P Hahahah, praise my own cooking! *paiseh paiseh*

Birth of Jean - Part II
We arrived at the maternity ward. The nurses quickly hooked up the CTG for me. Hubby was with me so not as boring as in the afternoon. Close to six o’clock, my ob-gyn dropped by to check on me before leaving the clinic. She’d asked me to admit straight away as the baby is going to arrive soonest tonight or latest tomorrow morning. I pleaded with her to let me go back for a shower first heheheh… (I’m sure you know why lah hor :P) She allowed but then cautioned that if my water bag breaks by the time monitoring is done (was to be monitored for another 20 minutes) then I would not be allowed to go back. Happily she bid me good bye.

20 minutes passed quickly; the nurse came to dismantle the CTG hooked to me and helped me get up from the bed. Just then, I felt a trickle of warm fluid at the private parts, as if I just wet my pants. Oh oh… could it be…??!!! Yeah, you guessed it! “I think my water bag had just broken!” I told the nurse. Boohoo… now I couldn’t go home to take shower! :(

No choice, I had to be admitted; so hubby went to do the necessary for hospital admission. I chose to stay in the maternity ward first since the 1st stage labour could take very long. The contractions were very strong, but I didn’t want to ask the nurse for any gas or painkillers because … I thought my pain threshold very high! Partly also want to save $ lah :P Eventually, I surrender to the pain because I could hardly relax and rest to conserve energy for the 2nd stage labour. I rang for the nurse to take me to the labour ward; there I requested for gas, and later asked for painkiller when the pain level didn’t seem to reduce.

Wahlau… the needle for the painkiller was gigantic! I braced myself for the jab on the buttock; luckily it was done in a jiffy! After a few minutes, the contractions were as painful as before.

DG : How come no difference one? *referring to the pain level*

Nurse : You’ve got to give the painkiller time to work, my dear.

I had expected the painkiller to work like magic epidural, count to ten and the pain goes away. How wrong I was! Anyway, later my toleration of the pain got better as I managed to doze of in between contractions. Nurses came in to check on the dilation from time to time; I was especially elated when I heard her say “6cm”! With Ian, I only managed 3cm (if I recall correctly) before going for emergency C-sec. Woohooo! I’m halfway there for VBAC!

Once, after the vaginal check, a gush of warm fluids wet my butt. “Oh, I think your amniotic sac just ruptured.” Nurse said matter-of-factly. “Eh, I thought it was broken already?” I asked. “Hmmm… no lah, it just broke. Perhaps it was only leaking just now.” Gah! I could’ve gone back for shower just now!

A relaxed mind and body does help accelerate the dilation process I think. Even kind of dazed, I could hear the nurse who checked on me telling the other “9cm, and very thin already.” Suddenly I became so alert hearing that heheheh…

By now, it’s slightly past 8pm. I felt like pushing, you know… push like when you do the big business, when the contraction came. But I dared not because I feared the baby might come out if I do (yeah… silly me!). Holding back the urge (to push) was actually worse than pushing; uncomfortable is an understatement! Luckily the experienced nurse came in shortly after and asked,

Nurse : Do you feel the urge to push? The feeling is like pang-sai, you know…?

DG : *nod…nod…nod*

Nurse : Then push lah…

DG : *nervous* Have you all informed the doctor?

Nurse : Don’t worry, we’ll call her. In the mean time, you can push when the contraction comes. *check me and then walk out*

Pushing helped to relief the contraction, as the pain now switched focus to private parts with each push. Time seemed to have switched to low gear from now on… Each time the nurses came in I asked them, “Is the doctor here yet?” I was worried that the baby would arrive before she did!

Anyway, she did come in about 10 minutes to 9pm. She came in with just T-shirt and Bermuda shorts; checked me and asked how I was. As she prepared to put on coat and gloves, she asked me to push hard.

Goodness knows how many times I’ve pushed with each contraction, but the baby is still not out yet. Frustrated, I let out a grunt while pushing. The doctor immediately said, “Shhh… Shhh… no sound. If you let out sound, the push will not be strong enough because the energy is lost through sound.” Logical explanation. So, don’t let the movies/dramas (about women screaming their hearts out while giving birth) bluff you…

With a few more pushes, hubby told me to “Push hard, dear, push, I can see the head now…” Panting, I really have to take very, very deep breaths for each push to last long enough. “C’mon, just a few more pushes and the baby will be out.” The doctor spurred me on. She even asked me to place my feet on her hip as support since she was standing beside the bed.

A few more great pushes, then suddenly I felt something slide out. I knew the baby is delivered. It was simply amazing; I felt an enormous sense of accomplishment and satisfaction on the successful VBAC. After that was the delivery of the placenta. I even chatted with my ob-gyn while she was stitching me up. I told her I’ve never seen a placenta before and asked how big it was; she picked up the kidney dish and showed me!

I don’t remember if I nursed Jean immediately after birth. I did carry her for a while. She didn’t cry; just slept very cozily in my arms. It was then I lovingly gazed at her very delicate face and let her fingers clutched mine. I traced her cheek with my index finger and gently pressed my lips on her forehead. Immediately after Ian’s birth, I was overcame with an immense love for him (and doubted at that time if I can have the same feeling for the 2nd one). I had the exact same feeling when I cradle Jean in my arms. Now I know that a mother’s love knows no bounds.

I am thankful to have two healthy and adorable children. I love you two very much, my darlings.

Birth of Jean - Part I
Year 2004, February 19th ~ 0250hour

I stirred in my sleep; felt a mild cramp in the tummy. That could be just a false labour sign since I was only 8 days away from my EDD, so I thought and went back to sleep.

Ring…… *alarm went off *

*yawn…* and *stretch*. Reluctantly I got out of bed and washed up to get ready for work. The slight contraction came again, I glanced at my watch to mentally note the time so that when the next contraction comes, I can tell how far it is apart and if it is real labour. From the pregnancy sites I’ve read it seemed common to have false labour signs especially one is nearing the due date.

At the work place, I did experience mild contractions but it was irregular, sometimes up to 2 hours apart. Anyhow I rang my ob-gyn to tell her of my symptoms; she asked me to go in for her to check me up. I thought it was a good idea too to let her check, and see if she’d order me to stay home and rest. Heheheh… I have one more day (today not inclusive) to start my maternity leave so if she would ask me to rest at home, that means I would get additional days off! I prayed hard she’d order me to rest at home hahaha…

I told my supervisor that I wasn’t feeling well with the contractions and would be seeing my doctor during lunch time. He told me to rest at home after seeing the doctor, but I said I would still call in from home for the conference meeting (as I have an agenda to present something).

Gee… I have forgotten if I had taken lunch before I see the doctor. I guess most probably not because I remember I had to arrive at the hospital before she goes off for lunch. But then again… I couldn’t recall if I had lunch that day!

At the clinic,

Ob-gyn : *check…check…check* You are only 1.5cm dilated… I will need to send you up to the ward for CTG before I can tell you if it’s actual labour. It’ll take approximately half and hour. Nurse, yadda yadda yadda …*gave instructions on what to get etc.*

Nurse : Please come with me…

The nurse brought me up to the ward and hooked my up to the CTG. So I was lying there, staring up on the ceiling and around while the CTG was recording the contractions and all. The CTG plotted the graph of the contractions, something like the seismic graph. When there is a contraction, there will be a spike. I was quite amused with my uterus activity LOL!

While waiting for the monitoring to be done, I prayed… that if this labour is for real, I would really, really hope for a successful normal delivery. Never mind if people say normal birth is painful. It sounds silly, but I thought I just have to experience giving birth naturally, to prove to myself that my body is able to function as it is supposed since that is nature’s intended way.

I still remember, on my first antenatal check of this pregnancy, I’d relayed to my ob-gyn about my simple birth plan.

DG : I wish to try for VBAC this time.

Ob-gyn : *looks startled at first and then smiled * Are you medically trained or something?

DG : Oh no no no… just that I’ve read up a lot on internet to know the terms… *heeheehee*

Ob-gyn : Okay. Can’t promise you anything; we’ll see how the pregnancy goes, and try when the time comes.

At last the monitoring was completed and I was sent back to the clinic. My ob-gyn wasn’t too happy with the results; apparently the nurses didn’t monitor long enough! So she asked me to be monitored again. But I told her I have a meeting at 3pm, and that I’d be back for the monitoring immediately after the meeting is over since home is only 10 minutes away. She agreed so I went back home.

It was a teleconference meeting with counterparts from different geographical sites. I clearly recalled that during the meeting I experienced quite a strong but still bearable contraction. Phew! Luckily it wasn’t at the time I was presenting. The meeting dragged, and only ended at almost half past four. I hurriedly got my bag and keys and headed to the hospital because the clinic closes at five.

As I was driving to the hospital, yet another contraction came while the car was going over a speed bump. Now that was really uncomfortable. I then figured that I don’t want to take risk to drive there by myself so I rang hubby and asked him to fetch me to the hospital.

Thank goodness my ob-gyn hasn’t gone back yet. We went straight to her clinic and the nurse brought me up to the ward immediately to get the CTG again. While walking to the elevator, another strong one came and I had to pause until it subsides. In the elevator, I squeezed hubby’s hand when another one came. By now, the contractions were pretty regular and stronger than in the morning.

... To be continued.
