Birth of Ian - Part II
My heart sank. I asked the doctor immediately whether that means I need to go for C-sec. He said he’ll need to monitor the situation first. He ordered the nurses to hook me up to the CTG to monitor the contractions and foetal heartbeat, and then left to do the ward rounds.

Hubby came back and waited with me in the labour ward. I called my office to tell my supervisor that I’ll be starting my maternity leave today. Then I informed my mama that I am in the hospital and all. The contractions were getting stronger and stronger by then and I agreed to be given N2O to relieve the contraction pain. Hubby told me it’s actually laughing gas; he was amused why I wasn’t laughing like a hyena after inhaling the gas!

About 0910hour, my Ob-Gyn came to check on me again and this time he recommended that I go for C-sec. He’d said it’s better not to wait any further cause there are signs of foetal distress. I had to choose whether to get epidural or GA for the C-sec. After consulting dad, I opted for epidural because I would be aware when the baby is taken out.

So the nurses prepared me for operation then wheeled me to the OT. Hubby wasn’t allowed into OT. They transferred me onto the OT bed; and then the anaesthetist came to inject the epidural. As a check to see if the drug has taken effect, he asked me to raise my leg. I tried mighty hard, but my leg didn’t move an inch. And at this time I was fully naked. Never have I been consciously naked in front of so many people before! *Hahahahah…*

They put up a cloth as a divider just before my bulging tummy, so I could not see how the doctor operated on me. But I could sense my lower abdomen was being pulled and pressed on. Soon after I heard a short cry, and I knew my baby was out. Happy was an understatement for that moment.

I think after they cleared baby’s air passage, the nurse brought him to me to have a look. He was so tiny and red, wailing “wueh… wueh… wueh”. Then I touched his cheek and gently whispered to him “Don’t cry, don’t cry, mama is here.” Miraculously he stopped; as if he understood what I just said. Then he was carried away for further examination by paediatrician.

The doctor finally finished stitching me up and I was monitored for about a hour or so before being released back to the maternity ward. I called so many people to inform them of the arrival of our bundle of joy. Mum and dad were there when I was wheeled back to the ward. They stayed for awhile and left because dad has to go back to work. I asked hubby to go back for lunch too.

Shortly after lunch hour, papa and mama came to see me. Coincidentally the nurse wheeled baby into the ward for me to nurse him. So papa and mama had a chance to look at Ian.

We bonded straight away. When I held Ian in my arms, it was simply... bliss.

Birth of Ian - Part I
Year 2000, December 5th ~ 2330hour

As usual, I was getting ready to tuck into bed so I went to the loo to empty my bladder. Being at 38 weeks pregnant, going to the loo can be as frequent as babies waking up for feed. That’s when I noticed… I had a show!!! Ooh… feeling exited, I know this is IT! The little guy is going to come out soon!

I told hubby immediately after coming out of the toilet. Then I started pacing about in the room, packing what I need to bring to the hospital. Yeah, being lazy me, I hadn’t yet packed the stuffs even though the Ob-Gyn’s clinic nurse had given me the list of items, during my 7th month antenatal check up, that I should bring along for the delivery. Luckily I had asked hubby to fix up the baby cot weeks ago.

After packing most of the stuffs, we weren’t sure whether we should go the hospital right away or wait till next morning, so hubby suggested asking mum and dad. We were told since I hadn’t started contractions yet, there was no hurry to go to the hospital. Anyway, the hospital is only 5-10 minutes away.

We retired to our room. It didn’t take long for hubby to start snoozing away. I tried to sleep, but couldn’t due to the excitement and anticipation of how the delivery would be. First time mah!! Of course exited, but funny I was not really nervous. I guess I just couldn’t wait to cradle my bundle of joy! My brain was very active; knowing how forgetful I am, I tried to think and think again if I had missed out any items to be packed. Checked one time… checked two times… checked three times… think… think… think… Okay, enough… I think I’ve got it all.

Relax, I think to myself while trying to clear my mind off to sleep. When I was about to doze off, I felt a slight tummy cramp, like the cramps during menstruation. It’s not painful, but made me very uncomfortable. I didn’t know this is actually contraction because nobody told me how it feels like. Anyway I dozed off only to find myself awaken by the cramps some 2 hours later. So the whole night I was like sleep-wake (due to cramp)-sleep-wake (due to cramp)… As the cramps were getting more and more frequent, it was really difficult fall asleep again.

Time seemed to pass so slowly when one is not sleeping well. At about 0500hour, I timed the contractions and found that they were about 10-15 minutes apart. The contractions were also getting too strong so I woke hubby and told him, “I think we have to go to the hospital now. My contractions are 10 minutes apart. Go ask dad.” We woke mum and dad to tell them of my contractions’ frequency; they think it’s time we go to the hospital. As I was walking from the front door to the car, one contraction came and I had to pause to hold onto the pillar at the side. Hubby drove the car and mum came with us to the hospital.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the nurse pushed a wheelchair and asked me to sit on it. I told her I could still walk but she insisted I sit on it. She wheeled me to the labour ward while hubby and mum were doing the admissions. Then I was asked to change into the cotton hospital gown... yeah… those that are very thin and only have strings at the back for tying. If I recall correctly, the strings are at the back of the neck and around the waist. So if you don’t tie properly can even see your butt :P

In that gown I felt so naked. Some more with the cold aircond, nipples are so pointy without bras to cover them up. I got up the bed in the labour ward; the senior nurse there proceeded to check my contractions, dilation etc. Then she told me I’m still in the early stage of labour; only 1.5cm dilated.

I don’t really remember the sequence of the events; but I know I was asked whether I have passed motion.

DG : Err… yesterday got. But don’t know still got any left or not…

Nurse : Would you want me to …(I forgot what the procedure it’s called)… so you can pass motion?

DG : Emm… yeah… I guess so. *heheh… I wouldn’t want stool to come up while I was pushing the baby later. How embarrassing that would be!!!*

It was an uncomfortable experience. Imagine having some liquid pushed through your anus. The feeling is very geli * still shudders when think of it*… It works like enema; after awhile, you’ll feel a stirring to want to pass motion.

I was also asked if I want to eat something, i.e. bread and Milo. I said yes because I figured I will need to have strength to push later. Hubby and mum came in to check on me and left shortly after.

By now it’s about 0800hour. My Ob-Gyn came and checked me. Dilation was only 3cm. So he ruptured the membrane to try to hasten dilation. I felt a gush of warm fluid flowing out; the nurse scooped it with the kidney dish. Then the doctor annouced there’s meconium in the amniotic fluid. The nurse showed me the fluid in the kidney dish; it was stained with dark greenish stuffs.

...To be continued

Fish Pie
Last weekend I baked a fish pie for dinner. It's a recipe by the Naked Chef I watched on travel and living channel weeks ago. A very easy-to-prepare dish and looked yummy, that's why I decided to try it out.

Taa..daa... the picture

It's not really burnt I assure you. Just that the cheddar cheese I sprinkled on top got browned by the baking.

My spouse said after taking the first mouthful, "Mmm... tastes good. I like it!" *DG beaming*
In jest, I told him, "You think your wife cannot cook meh?"
Then he smiled, "Heheheheh... :P"
I asked my brothers to come over to try as well cause there's so much! They liked it too!

I'm not a person of precise-cooking, like measure 1 tbsp of oil, 1 tsp of salt etc. All I did was just estimate the amount of ingredients based on what I saw on the show. No I didn't take down the amount needed in the recipe (I was relaxing on the couch while watching :P). And it still turned out nice.

Here's the ingredients:

fish fillet, cut in 1-inch width strip - dory fish will be easiest
300g spinach, steamed or boiled
2 hard boiled eggs, sliced or cut into eight-halves
5-6 potatoes, boiled thoroughly and mashed
250ml cream
1/4 cup of finely chopped parsley leaves
30g-40g cheddar cheese, shredded
one medium yellow onion, chopped
3-4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tbsp of lemon/lime juice
1 tbsp of olive oil
1 tbsp of butter
salt and pepper for seasoning

Steps:
1. Put olive oil in the pan and add the butter. Saute onion and garlic untill fragrant.
2. Add cream to above, stir and add salt and pepper for seasoning.
3. When starting to boil, add in chopped parsley, stir to boil and turn off heat.
4. Add cheddar cheese; heat from sauce will melt the cheese. Stir to blend well. Lastly add lemon juice.
5. In a baking dish, put in the sliced fish fillet at the bottem, then line the spinach on the fish.
6. Place the egg slices on top of spinach, then pour the cream sauce over covering everything.
7. Lastly cover the dish with mashed potatoes on top. Can sprinkle a bit of cheddar cheese if you want (warning: will be easily burnt!).
8. Bake in oven for about 30-40 minutes at 220 degree Celcius. (tips: check from time to time)

Happy trying!

My Angels
Here's a sneak peek at my angels.

They look as if from the same cookie mould, don't they? Well, after all they are from the same manufacturer designer *ahem*.

Can you guess which photo is Ian and which photo is Jean? No prize for the winner :P.

I had sent their photos to one of my university coursemate as an update; she said they are so cute and look like angels. Indeed they are my angels. A lot of people, relatives and friends, have commented that they resemble their pretty mother *that's yours truly heheh*. Of course the papa was not too happy to hear that, cause he would whisper to Jean's ear, "No lah... you look more like papa hor..." *Domestic Goddess rolls eyes*. He had hoped that his girl would resemble him at least to balance up since the son already takes after the wife.

Sexymama did asked me whether I'd post up my photo. I told her may be not. But, from my kids' photo, you can guess how I look perhaps? Hint: they really really look a lot like me :) Do you think so Twinsmom?

Why jump on the bandwagon now?
It may seem odd that I only jump on the blogging bandwagon now and not earlier. After all 5xmom did urge me to start my own blog at the time she started. I had all sort of excuses then... no time, not a writer material, was am not good at writing essay (in fact I hated it when schooling), blablabla.

Twinsmom asked, "wah...finally...bueh tahan leh? after see we all happily blogging away...". Actually, it's because recently I suddenly have this urge to record down some significant chapters in my life for my children, particularly their birth, while I still remember. So I thought why not do it on blog? There were so many mothers doing it for themselves as well as their children. Also it's a good way to exchange views with others and share some thoughts. Hence I decided to create a blog.

Then I have a problem... what nick name should I use? I've decided not to use the previous one cause it sounded too plain and doesn't reflect me have an identity. And I thought what if I have more than 2 kids? That nick name wouldn't be appropriate anymore. So I asked Sexymama if she has any suggestion, and she asked me how flashy a nick I want... hahahah. Anyway we didn't come up with any during that chat session.

Luckily I got an inspiration one evening while watching Nigella Bites on Astro. So Domestic Goddess it is! And I kind of like it. Am I vain or what? heheh...

Queer Taste
Ever come across a 4 year-old kid who likes rojak? I have one at home. A few days ago Mama was relating to me how Ian had his first taste of rojak and liked it instantly.

That afternoon Mama was enjoying some guavas with rojak sauce while watching astro. Ian asked for a piece and insisted on dipping into the rojak sauce eventhough Mama told him it's spicy. So after a bite, it seemed he liked the tastes so much so he continued dipping into the rojak sauce. Obviously he was experiencing the slight burning sensation on his tongue but never complained about it. Instead he got himself a glass of water. Brave boy eh?

Yesterday after having lunch at home, Mama and I had some ambarellas with rojak sauce. He saw and asked to have some too. So three of us finished the ambarellas; I could see he really enjoyed it. Queer taste for a kid don't you think?
